41 – This Gift, This Curse

"Talking to yourself?" Mick asked, coming into the room.

"I thought you went to bed," Will replied.

"I did, but," Mick grumbled, "I kept going over all those damned test questions in my head." He plopped down on the other end of the sofa. "So what's got your tail in such a twist?"

"Kevin, Sue, the attack. Kevin said he didn't think she had a boyfriend, present or ex, but is that true?"

"Tell him to ask her."

"I could, or"—Will nodded slowly—"you could. You're supposed to be hanging around with him, which I gather means going to that coffee house where they hang out. Just be your usual nosy self and pry."

Mick snorted out a laugh. "Me, nosy?"

"Yeah, you. And your asking might sit better with her than if he did, especially if she really is interested in him."

"So you don't think Charlie's involved in the attack?"

"I'm not eliminating him, but the idea that he might have been puts a very sick light things."

Mick frowned. "Incest?"

"Or at least incestuous feelings for her."

"That's beyond gross. Okay, I'll ask her. I'll also keep an eye open for anyone at the coffee house who looks like they're interested in her. You know, someone who might want to date her but thinks she's already involved with Kev."

"That was my thought too."

"Great minds, and all that crap." Mick laughed, as he got up. "Okay, I'm going to try the sleep thing again and tomorrow I'll see what I can find out from her."

"Thanks."

Once Mick was back in his room, Will left the apartment to do a slow walk-through of the building to make certain no one was lurking about.

If anyone sees me, they'll probably call the cops. But better that than my missing Kevin's attacker being here, looking for another chance to get at him.

Feeling confident after his search that there was no reason to worry, for the moment at least, Will returned to the apartment.
