You Belong to Me – 44

Corey’s phone rang again, about an hour after he’d finished supper and was watching a comedy on TV. As always these days, he took it out hesitantly, praying he wouldn’t see Payphone on the screen. He didn’t. It was his brother Kerry’s number.

I can’t talk to him in here. The stalker will hear me.

Quickly Corey replied with a text. “Call me back in five minutes?”

Sure was Kerry’s reply.

“Damned telemarketers,” he growled. Then, grabbing his jacket and keys and leaving the TV on, he silently left the apartment, remembering to arm the security as he did. He was outside the building when his phone rang again.

“What was that all about?” Kerry asked.

“My apartment is bugged.”

“By the police?”

Corey sighed. “I almost wish that was the case. Okay, no I don’t. My stalker put some listening devices in during one of his… visits.”

“How did you find this out?”

“Thanks to Detective Foster. By the way, I’m pretty certain I’m not a suspect in Brad’s murder.”

“Well, that’s good. You could have called and let me know.”

“Yeah, sorry. I should have, but with everything that’s happening….”

“I understand. Now, tell me what’s going on.”

Corey did, blow by blow. He finished by saying, “I hope to hell the stalker does what we want him to. I keep waiting for him to call and tell me I’d better not meet with my ex, meaning Scott.”

“Corey, think about it. If he did, that would tip you off that he’d bugged your place.”

“Okay, you’re right. But tomorrow—after we go to the coffee shop—I have the feeling all hell will break loose. He hasn’t made it any secret he’s been watching me.”

“No kidding, considering he killed your friend.”

Corey winced. “Yeah.”
