You Do What You Have To - 29

"Would that give you a reason to have Mackenzie arrested?" Micky asked.

"If he's providing kids to Tanzer and I could prove it? Yes." Robin explained who the man was and what he did. "Vaughn is a different case. No way will he admit he's involved with international child sex trafficking, even though I'd be willing to bet he and Mackenzie are working together. Either Mackenzie's providing him with kids or vice versa."

"Give me your gun and I'll go put the bastard out of his misery," Micky spat out angrily.

Robin smiled. "I wish it was that easy. One of his people would take over if someone killed him."

"Get them all together and pull a St Valentine's Day Massacre?" Micky shook his head in disgust, then said, "Apropos of nothing, I suppose, but why are you willing to tell me everything, and let me be here when you called your… What is he? Your boss? Your control, as they call them in the movies?"

"Boss works. And why shouldn't I trust you at this point? I gave you the basics when I saved your ass from Darren and Mackenzie's people. You let me have the list, so I doubt you're undercover for Mackenzie."

Micky snorted. "As if. I'd be lousy at that."

"You never know. Stranger things have happened. You might even be good at it. You managed to stay safe for almost a week after Darren was shot."

"Dumb luck," Micky muttered. "How did you get into doing what you do?"

"Because of my dad."

"Has he retired now? Is that allowed?"

"Probably. In his case though, someone 'retired' him permanently. I was in college at the time and"—Robin sighed—"when it happened, I dropped out to try to find out why he died. I thought it was just murder, pure and simple. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I found out differently when Eldon stepped in to stop me before I did something stupid."

Micky gripped Robin's shoulder, giving it a compassionate squeeze. "Did you—did anybody—find your dad's killer?"

"Yeah. Not me, as much as I wanted to, so I could take out the bastard. My... Okay, full disclosure time."

"Meaning?" Micky asked with a frown, releasing his hold on Robin's shoulder.

"The organization I keep talking about? It does exist, but not the way you undoubtedly think. I suppose you could call it a family business. My father and his brother started it about fifteen years ago. Dad was a private detective who saw a lot of injustice that he couldn't do anything about. My uncle is ex-Army. One night they went out for a few beers, got to talking about things, and came up with the idea of trying to stop some of the worst of the worst who no one else seemed to be able to, or be interested in. As my brothers got older, they joined in. Then Dad was killed." Robin smiled dryly. "They all said I was too young. I told them to fuck off and became part of the team."
