You Belong to Me - 28

Kerry woke early Sunday morning to the sound of his phone. As he reached for it, he checked the time. “Two a.m.? Now who’s done what to whom?” he grumbled, figuring he was being called in to a crime scene. He frowned when he saw the number on the caller ID wasn’t from the department but rather from some motel. One with an out-of-state area code.

“Trouble?” Jena asked sleepily.

“I don’t know,” he said as he answered the phone.

The first thing he heard was the panicked words “They think I killed somebody.”

“Corey?” Kerry replied in disbelief. “Who?”

“The police.”

“I figured that. I mean who do they think you killed?”

“A… a friend.”

“Why do they think you killed her?”

“Because the body’s in my apartment. Or it was. They… I’m at a motel now while they… process the scene?”

“That’s what it’s called. Okay, start from the beginning and tell me what’s going on.” Kerry was on his feet by then, heading out of the bedroom.

“I was out at a club, and we were supposed to meet there, and… well….”

“She didn’t show up? Were you with anyone else?”

“No. I waited and then gave up and went home.”

“And found her body?”

“No.”

“No?”

“The door was sort of open, and my phone was dead, so I went down to the manager’s place and called the cops.”

“Then what?”

“They came and found the… the body… and then all sorts of people showed up, including a detective. I know he thinks I’m the killer.”

  1. Hope Corey's brother Kerry loves him unconditionally and doesn't call for a family intervention because he's gay.

    1. I'm sure he wouldn't do that. He's a smart man and he does love Corey.
