One Plus Two Equals... - 39

At first, when Julyan approached him with his idea, Auden protested vehemently that it wasn't safe and they were insane if they thought he'd go along with it. Of course in the process he sort of forgot to mention he'd known about it from the moment it had been suggested and had already decided it could work. After all, he had to show them who was in charge.
It didn't take Julyan long to figure out what he was doing once it occurred to him that, just as Duane knew what Auden did when he was 'out', so Auden would have known about the plan even as it was being hatched.
"I should shoot you for being such an ass," Julyan growled, shaking a finger at Auden.
Auden laughed. "Wouldn't do any good, I'd just heal and then make you pay."
When Julyan asked how, Auden demonstrated. They both fell asleep very happily sated, and then in the morning, Julyan awoke in Duane's arms at which point he was more than adequately rewarded for convincing Auden to accept the plan.
The next few days passed in a flurry of activity.
Duane went through the official process of turning the restaurant over to the new owner and then started to pack up what he planned on taking with him for the move to New York.
While that was happening, Julyan was playing his part, which consisted of sulking around because Duane was leaving and then very overtly announcing it was time to find a new job, and a new boyfriend who would 'respect' him. He showed up the next morning with said 'boyfriend' in tow, had a big fight with Duane and then left to 'Pick up my things and take them to Mitch's place.' Mitch being the 'boyfriend', an old friend of Julyan's who had agreed to play the role after Julyan told him he had to get out of a bad relationship. Everyone, including Jack, bought his story.
He did go back to the condo, leaving again with a suitcase full of old newspapers to make it look heavy enough to contain his belongings. Much later, under the cover of darkness, he snuck back, settling in until it was time for them to head to New York.
Sunday morning was spent with Duane working to transform Julyan into someone who looked quite different from the young man he was in love with. Julyan's light blond hair was now a much darker shade and since it was longer than it'd been when they'd first met Duane decided to split the difference, trimming and parting it. Julyan grimaced at how severe it looked but accepted it. Duane had picked up a pair of dark-rimmed glasses with clear lenses, as well as brown tinted contacts from an optometrist the agency used on occasion.
"Now I look like a nerdy college student," Julyan grumbled as he stared at his reflection in the mirror.
"A very cute one. I'd do you anytime."
Julyan snorted. "You already do."
"Complaining?"
"As if." Julyan turned to kiss him quickly before heading back to the bedroom to finish the last of his packing.
He had already, at Duane’s suggestion, let his family know he was leaving the city, giving them almost the same excuse he’d used to explain to his co-workers why he’d quit working at the restaurant. “I can’t stay in the same city as him,” he’d told them mournfully, playing it to the hilt. “When I figure out where I want to live I’ll let you know, I promise.”

One Plus Two Equals... - 38

The day had been tense. Duane had introduced his employees to the new owner of the restaurant, a man who seemed both enthusiastic and knowledgeable—but then that was to be expected. Duane's superior was an expert at choosing the right person to take over a business that Duane had been running. The whole situation was made even worse by the fact Julyan seemed to be avoiding him except when necessary.
Now Duane was pacing the condo living room while Julyan watched. "I know Auden already told you why you're not coming with us."
"Oh yeah, he made it very clear I would be nothing but a liability." Julyan glared at Duane. "Why did you let him tell me instead of doing it yourself?"
"For one, because Auden was the one the boss told and secondly, because he wasn't about to let me. I suspect he felt you'd take it better coming from him."
Julyan continued to glower. "He was afraid I'd wheedle you around to letting me come along."
"It's not a decision any of us have a choice in, Juls."
"Why the hell not! And if you knew this would happen, why the hell did you let me think…?" He scrubbed a hand through his hair angrily. "Doesn't anyone give a damn that I love you?"
"That's the problem," Duane replied softly as he came over to him. "A lot of people would give a damn. Unfortunately, they'd be ones who would use it against us if they could. Auden told you that."
"There has to be a way."
"Don't you think I wish there was?" Duane knelt in front of him, resting his hands on his knees. "I will not put you at risk, and neither will Auden."
"Do the…creatures Auden goes after know what he is or just that he takes them out when necessary?"
"Most don't. They think he's only an enforcer for the agency."
"So what's the problem then? We go wherever you're headed, you… What do you do, set up another restaurant? You hire me afterward and I'm just another waiter as far as anyone knows."
"Juls, I said most don't know but there are a very few who do. How would you have me defend you against them if they saw you there?"
"Oh." Julyan chewed his lip. "What if I changed how I look? Dyed my hair, wore glasses, maybe grow a mustache or something. Then they'd think I was just a nobody."
Duane got up and began pacing again; glancing at Julyan several times with a thoughtful look on his face. Finally he smiled. "It could work," then laughed when Julyan pumped a fist in the air. "It's not only my decision," he cautioned.
"You have to ask your boss?"
"If Auden ever heard you call him that…"
Julyan snorted. "I bet he just did, although I wasn't talking about him. So what happens if he doesn't agree?"
"You'll point out to him that it's two against one."
"Why me? Oh, yeah, guess you're right." He tapped his fingers on his thigh as if waiting for Duane to shift.
Duane laughed. "Not happening, Juls, not yet. I want my time with you."
"You're reading my mind?"
"I hope that wasn't a question."
"Well, it was." Julyan grinned. "On the other hand. Hey! Damn, you're crazy."
Duane didn't bother to reply as he tossed Julyan over his shoulder and carried him into the bedroom.

It's release day for 'The Seven Days of Christmas'!

The Seven Days of Christmas

GENRE: Gay Romance
LENGTH: 17,079 words
RATING: flame rating 1

Trey hates Christmas with a passion. Despite the fact he needs to deal with it because he owns a costume shop, it is an anathema to him because he broke up with his lover on Christmas Day three years ago.

Marty is a bartender at the local bar Trey goes to sometimes to unwind after a hectic day. He's more than a bit interested in Trey, but doesn't know how to let him know, especially since he'd never told Trey he's gay, too.

When Trey tells Marty he's suddenly shorthanded, with a week to go until Christmas, Marty jumps on the chance to get to know him better by volunteering to assist at the shop.

Can Marty help Trey overcome his Christmas phobia? More to the point, can Trey accept that Marty is interested in him not only as a friend, but on a more personal level?

EXCERPT:
Several minutes later, Trey was answering Marty's question. "I don't need a house. I'm hardly ever home. I run the shop during the day, and then spend a lot of my evenings there, making more costumes. By the time I get home I barely have the energy to shower before I fall into bed."

"You've been here the last few nights," Marty pointed out.

"Because I need to get away from red velvet, white fake fur, and green and red elf costumes before I put a torch to them."

    Marty chuckled. "That bad, huh?"

"Yeah, it is. Whoever invented Christmas ..." Trey scowled as he took a deep drink of his beer.

"Aren't the other holidays just as bad?"

"Well, I'm not a big fan of bunny suits, but other than that ..." Trey grinned. "I love Halloween. It's exhausting but exciting, and I hire enough temps to keep from going insane."

"It's too late to find another one for the next few days?"

"I'm afraid so. It does take at least some training so they know the difference between, say, Victorian and Biblical. Okay, that's a bit extreme but you get the picture."

Marty nodded as he began wiping down the bar. "I was thinking, but I guess not."

"Umm?" Trey cocked his head in question.

"I'm off during the day, well until six, which means I'd have to leave at five."

Trey's eyes widened in surprise. "Are you volunteering to help out?"

Marty shrugged. "I could do crowd control, sort of. Keep people entertained until it's their turn, if that's how it works. I wouldn't be any good at pointing them in the right direction, although I do know what Santa's look like." He mentally crossed his fingers that Trey would accept his offer. It might give him a chance to get to know him better. Something that was hard to do when the only time they saw each other they were separated by two feet of oak bar top.

"All the Santas are rented, thank God." Trey pensively tapped a finger on his book. "If you're serious, you're on. It doesn't pay a fortune, but if you want to wear a costume here on Christmas Eve, you can borrow one."

"I wasn't thinking about the money, though I won't turn it down. I figured, you're a friend, you need help, and I'm willing to give it."

"You have no idea how much I appreciate that. We open at ten. If you show up at nine I can give you the cook's tour."

"You have food, too?" Marty wisecracked in an attempt to cover his elation.

"No, smartass. I think a café attached to the shop would be more than I could handle."

"Probably, at least right now. Okay, I'll be there at nine on the dot. I do need the address."

Trey wrote it down on a napkin when Marty handed him a pen.

"I used to live close to there. Why didn't I ever see it?"

"Now that, I couldn't answer," Trey replied. "Maybe because you never needed a costume?"

    "There is that."

"I better get out of here," Trey said, sliding off the barstool. "Be on time, or I'll dock your pay," he teased.

"Oh, no!" Marty clasped his chest in horror. "Please, Mr. Scrooge, not that."

Trey laughed. "First I'm the Grinch, now I'm Scrooge? Is that a step up, or down?"

"Sideways?" Marty winked, and then watched Trey until he had left the bar. Don't get my hopes up, he cautioned himself. He might never see me as anything more that his local bartender and a sort of friend, especially since he has no clue I'm gay, too. How do I rectify that without sounding like I'm coming on to him? With any sort of luck, working there will give me a chance to figure it out.

One Plus Two Equals... - 37

The idea that Duane and Auden were leaving him—and Julyan now thought of them as the two men he loved, not one individual with two halves—caused conflicting emotions for him.
"Less than a week," he repeated angrily.
"It was supposed to be two days from now but I got him to give us more time."
"What about the restaurant? Oh, never mind."
Auden chuckled. "That's Duane's province, obviously, but if things go as they always do, the boss already has someone lined up to take over."
"Whoever it is, I'm not going to stay and work for them," Julyan grumbled. It was the truth. He had every intention of either convincing Duane to take him with him or somehow following them when they left. But that was for later.
"Julyan, please don't make this any harder than it already is."
"I'm sorry. It's just… How am I going to survive without you?"
"The same way you did before we came into your life."
"Not possible," Julyan spat out, pulling away from him. "Before, I didn't know what it was like to love someone. Now I love both of you."
"No matter what you think, I understand. Believe me, I do. I never loved anyone until you." He sighed deeply. "Sometimes, when it seems fate has finally smiled on you, something comes along to rip the rug out from under you."
"A bit of a mixed metaphor."
"Yes, I guess it is, but true nonetheless."
"We still have some time together." Julyan stood, holding out his hand. "Let's make the most of it while we can."
"What the hell, why not." Auden took it, allowing Julyan to pull him up, snickering when the younger man muttered, 'Such enthusiasm'. "Believe me, for this, I have a great deal of enthusiasm," he replied as Julyan led him to the bedroom.

One Plus Two Equals... - 36

"No!" Auden glared at his boss.
"Yes," was the stern reply. "You know the rules. You go where you're needed, and right now that's New York. Your contact there has already been informed you'll arrive on Thursday."
"And if I refuse?"
His boss smiled tightly. "Just as you know the rules, you know the consequences of breaking them."
Auden did, and if things had been different he might not have thought twice about doing that. On the other hand, if they'd been different then being sent off to somewhere new wouldn't have mattered anyway.
"Next Monday and not a day sooner." When his boss gave one sharp nod of agreement, Auden left.
Twenty minutes later he walked into the condo.
Julyan came to the kitchen door, obviously expecting Duane. When he saw Auden, he started to smile but one look at Auden's face put an end to that. "What's wrong?"
"Sit down. Please."
"That bad, huh?" Julyan quickly went to the sofa, perching nervously on the edge.
"That bad. I've been…we've been reassigned."
Julyan looked at him in shock. "To where and how soon?"
"Does it matter?"
"Hell yes, it matters! I have to know what clothes to pack and…"
"You can't come with us." The look on Julyan's face at his words almost broke Auden's resolve not to let him join them. For Julyan's own safety however, he knew it wasn't an option.
Julyan stared at him defiantly. "I can. I will. Duane won't leave without me even if you will. He…he loves me too much to leave me behind."
"And we both love you too much to put you in danger." Finally Auden sat down beside him, taking his hands. "If anyone found out how important you are to us, it could put all of us in mortal danger."
"I don't understand. It's no secret I'm living here with Duane and no one's threatened me or him because of it."
"True, because as far as those who might be interested are concerned, you're Duane's cute little boy-toy he picked up to keep him company. And before you go off the deep end," he added when Julyan bristled angrily, "it's the story the boss let be whispered around to keep you safe once he found out about you."
"I don't care what he, or you, think. I'll convince Duane to take me with him."
Auden shook his head. "That would make you more than just a boy-toy and we'd be back to square one."
"It's not fair," Julyan said disconsolately.
Gathering him into to his arms, Auden muttered, "No, it's not but it's how things have to be."
"How soon?"
"We have to be in…where we're going by next Monday."
"That's less than a week!"
